Early home movies show me as a sour-faced baby floating in my family’s indoor pool. Later, the indoor pool became my painting studio, as the water was never hot enough for my cold weather-adverse family. In second grade, my family and I moved from Canada to Sarasota, Florida. This move brought after-school swims and pool parties - a new joy for me. I truly love being in the water.
When I started graduate school in New York City, I began to think about the concept of the American Dream and what it means to be successful. My thoughts turned to the backyard swimming pool and California - it seemed I was always California Dreaming! I started to research homes in California that had succulent gardens; with my idea that cut flowers are dying before us, while succulents live for what feels like forever. These searches brought a deeper understanding of David Hockney’s work, Mid-century Modern architecture and Palm Springs. Palm Springs really stole my heart. It has everything I love: heat, Hollywood glamour, architecture and swimming pools.
In Home for the Holidays, I present 6 new, smaller-scale paintings of Southern California homes and pools. Painting them is an aspirational escape for me, especially now, when the weather in New York turns frigid and the pandemic rages.
