Lately, I feel like I am in a space ship floating out in space. I have been carefully observing mask wearing and social distancing during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic. My home, my car, and my studio are my space capsule. My studio has been a haven and a refuge during this pandemic period, almost a sanctuary. It is a serene place inside, floating in a world of stress and distress, but I feel cut-off from many of the places and people that are important to me. I live alone and have had little in-person contact with my friends and colleagues since the beginning of the pandemic. I go to my studio every day and it has been my silver-lining in this period of social distancing and isolation. As an artist, I crave solitude to immerse myself in the art making process. This isolation has allowed me a rich period of focus and creativity.

My longtime friend, photographer Mark Hanauer, has taken many portraits of me. A few years ago, he suggested that I paint on top of a photographic portrait that he had taken of me. This was the first in a series of collaborations between Mark and other artists, producing unique painted portraits with great sucess. He printed the photograph on a matte photo paper which turned out to be a great surface for the gouache paints that I typically use. I was delighted to see how this combination of the photo and the painted marks came together. The original photo image can still be viewed through the overlay of paint, but together they create something new.

Last year I asked Mark to take some photos of me in specific poses - gestures of openness and sharing. For me, the art process is a conversation, a dialogue, an exchange between myself and the artwork, between the artwork and the viewer. Many of the motifs that I use in my abstract paintings have a sense of emanation or energy - I wanted to use them in these images as a physical representation of this giving and receiving. A gift from the heart and spirit.
